Overview

Gerai Satay at Jalan Shahbandar offers an authentic taste of traditional Malaysian satay, nestled in the peaceful environment of Kampung Pegawai, Batu Pahat. This humble spot specializes in grilled skewers with rich, smoky flavors that capture the essence of local street food culture. Their signature dishes include juicy and tender Sate Ayam Daging (chicken and beef satay), Satay Kambing (goat satay), and the ever-popular Mee Bandung, presenting a well-rounded menu that appeals to both locals and visitors seeking genuine flavors.

The setting stands out with its open-air, windswept atmosphere that lends a curious blend of nature’s calm and a nostalgic vibe. Customers appreciate the rustic charm and acknowledge the friendly, attentive staff that enhance the relaxed dining experience. Notably, Gerai Satay uses coconut sticks as skewers instead of the usual bamboo, a subtle yet distinctive tradition. Their ketupat—rice woven in coconut leaves—is handmade, avoiding the typical plastic-wrapped compressed rice cakes found elsewhere. This attention to tradition adds authenticity and respect for heritage that discerning diners will value.

Longtime patrons like Salawati Shahir share heartfelt memories tied to the place, highlighting its multi-generational appeal as it continues to serve families across decades. The satay here is praised for its balanced marinade and tenderness, especially the beef satay, which stands out as both flavorful and juicy. While some recommend an update to the dining space for greater comfort, the overall experience remains anchored by quality food and warm service.

Gerai Satay is ideal for those craving a genuine Malaysian satay experience away from the urban rush. It caters well to families, food enthusiasts, and travelers eager to indulge in classic dishes steeped in local tradition. With its unique skewers, freshly grilled flavors, and serene setting, this roadside gem at Jalan Shahbandar continues to earn its place among Batu Pahat’s memorable satay destinations.

Authentic traditional Sate (Grilled Skew meat). They using coconut stick as skewer instead bamboo stick in commons Sate seller. Serve with Ketupat (Woven coconut leaf fill with rice) rather than compress rice cake in plastic. Rare species.

Satays are great, must try! Updates on 22/2/2020: Today I decided to buy 20 sticks back home for dinner. But I found out later only 16 sticks were packed in the plastic. I hope it's just a careless mistake. To play safe, always count before you leave.
